In our Health Coaching, many of our patients ask us different questions related to coffee, since it is an important part of their life. But not only do we know it for its taste and properties, but because it is a drinking beverage, many myths are generated around it, such as: Does it really wake you up? Can it be addictive ? in this blog we answer these and other concerns

1. Wakes you up.

Truth: the sensation of alertness and emotion is due to the coffee content, which acts as a central nervous system stimulant.

2. You can be addicted to the first cup of coffee.

It depends: the effect on the nervous system varies according to the amount consumed. It is also an alkaloid, which can cause addiction.

3. Pregnant women should not take it.

It depends: some pregnant women think that drinking coffee during pregnancy can be harmful. The reality is that it does not cause congenital effects or babies with low birth weight. But if the stimulating effect of coffee reaches the fetus, it can cause inconvenience in this period.

4. If you have a urinary tract infection, avoid it.

Truth: Although coffee has diuretic effects, it can cause bladder irritation. Careful with this!

5. Every time I drink coffee, I run, fly and accelerate

Truth: if you need to feel active, coffee is an excellent option, as it releases adrenaline in the blood.

6. Drinking coffee keeps you slim.

Neither true nor false: some people think that due to its antioxidant effect, coffee is a great fat burner. The truth is that it does not help you lose or gain weight, so you can consume it anytime you want. Be careful to add three tablespoons of sugar or half a cup of milk!

7. It causes negative effects on people with diabetes.

False: For diabetics, coffee alone does not alter the blood glucose level. However, it is important that the attending physician is consulted.

8. Hypertensive, refrain.

Truth: if you are hypertensive, be careful! Coffee tends to raise blood pressure.

9. Coffee should not be combined with dairy products.

It depends: if you consume a source of calcium with coffee, the latter can absorb the nutrient, but that does not mean that it affects nutrition. Keep in mind that it all depends on how often you mix these foods.

10. It is a healthy drink.

Truth: There are studies that say that coffee has a greater amount of phenolic compounds, which have a high antioxidant capacity, even greater than green tea, beer, apple juice, etc. An adequate, even healthy, dose of coffee consumption is 2 cups a day.
